Athleat Barbeque Tips

So its Barbecue time, and to make like the Caveman, and cook your food over an open flame...The Paleo/Primal Way, we have put together 10 great tips to make sure you have the best BBQ possible...

1. Build a Great Multi-Level Fire:

The best fire is one made from sustainable real lumpwood charcoal. Try to make a multi level fire because it has different temperature sections, which means you can move food around as you need to, to avoid burning. Try adding some flavoured wood chippings to your fire for an even more authentic taste.

2. Buy The Best Quality Meat/Fish You Can Afford:

There is a reason that cheap meat is CHEAP! Because its chock full of bad stuff you do not want in your body! You get what you pay for in the meat world! And Athleats grass fed produce is as good as you can get!

3. Do Not Burn Your Food!

Studies have shown that well-done and charred meat contains carcinogens that can increase your risk of cancer. There are two substances to look out for; Heterocyclic Amines (HCA) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), so try to keep your steaks rare/medium, keep the meat away from flare ups (by following tip 1), try to trim off excess fat (or render it) and use a high quality oil (Like rapeseed or even coconut) to put on your meat before grilling for protection. All of these will help to reduce both HCA and PAH, and keep you free from cancer causing substances.

4. Lighten Up On The Brewski's

Sounds obvious, but sometimes you just get carried away. Beer and drink mixers are packed with calories. Instead of throwing back a six pack, try some red wine which is full of great health benefits...in moderation! Stay hydrated with plenty of filtered water throughout the barbeque.

5. Just Add Veggies

Increase the amount of "greens" you are eating at a BBQ by layering the grill with veggies, which are packed with disease-fighting flavonoids. Try kebabs with chicken, peppers, onion, squash and mushrooms. They taste great too, the more colours and flavours the better!

6. Go Easy On The Ice Cream

Embrace the season with a fruit salad, sliced watermelon or grilled pineapple. You'll get a delicious dessert with antioxidants and fewer calories and sugar than ice cream

7. Try Putting A Whole Fish On the BBQ!

Like the Grass Fed Beef Athleat supply, oily fish is another great source of Omega 3 fatty acids, and the fish scores low on the calorie counter! Get some mackeral, sardines or even something more exotic like salmon or trout! Some great oil, a fire and a squeeze of lemon is all you need after that.

8. Don't Treat All Salads the Same

Potato, pasta, egg... all full of saturated fats. You should try and load up on the simple rocket salad, 23 calories in a whole bag!

9. Be Aware of Food Safety!

To avoid food poisoning, try to keep cooked meats completely separate from uncooked, and keep foods chilled prior to the event and an hour before being cooked, take it out of the fridge and also take it out of its vacuum packaging to allow the meat to bloom ready for slapping on the grill.

10. Use Marinades To Stave off Disease

Research has shown that herbs from the Lamiaceae family (Basil, Mint, Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano and Sage) when used in marinades reduced the HCA formation when grilling meat, these herbal antioxidants also reduce the formation free radicals in the bloodstream!

Hopefully you can use these tips and really enjoy the barbeque (healthy Athleat Style) this year....when the weather allows!
